Every year Valley Youth provides financial support to local young people who have ideas for initiatives, projects or groups and need some help to get them off the ground. For example, if you wanted to start a sports club but needed money to hire a venue or supply uniforms and other equipment for your team, this is something that you could apply for a grant for.

There are two types of grants: biannual grants and responsive grants.

Biannual Grants

Biannual grants are offered twice per financial year. Individuals, community groups, organisations and local businesses can apply for up to $5000, $10000 or $20000 for community activities, projects or substantial initiatives which fulfill one or more of the following goals: Enhance the wellbeing of individuals and community groups; Promote a clean, green and beautiful environment; Create a vibrant and diverse city with opportunities for all; or Provide a friendly and safe community.

Responsive Grants

Responsive grants are open all year round and close on the first day of each month. You can apply for up to $1,000 in two areas:

  1. Individual residents can apply for financial support to participate in sports, arts or educational activities.
  2. Local not-for-profit organisations or community groups can apply for projects that meet an emerging and/or unexpected community need.

Applying for a grant

When applying for a grant, your idea needs to fit certain criteria in order to be eligible. If you’re a young person from the local area, Valley Youth can help you apply for a grant by providing you with advice around your idea and how to meet the criteria.

One example of a successful youth grant application is the North West Gaming Club. The North West Gaming Club is a group of young people based in Avondale Heights, who started their own games club. They meet once a fortnight to play video games and make new friends by hosting open sessions and holding game tournaments during school holidays. The group were successful in obtaining a community grant through the Moonee Valley City Council Community Grants program in 2016 and have been running great events for other young people ever since! Check out the North West Gaming Facebook page to read more about them.
